One in four (25%) girls in Uganda aged 15-19 years have had a child or are pregnant,34 % of Ugandan girls are married by 18yrs, 28% of maternal deaths occur among young girls (15-25 years), young people are responsible for 34% of new HIV infections annually.
Wakiso district is battling high teenage pregnancy rates at 24 %. To combat this, PHIC is committed to empowering students with knowledge to control their bodies and guide their decisions.
In the past 8months PHIC in collaboration with the Office of the District Education Officer (DEO) has conducted Information, Education and Communication (IEC) sessions on SRHR in 10 different schools of Primary and Post-primary levels in Wakiso District including Kisimbiri church of Uganda primary school,
St. Augustine’s collage, Gombe Kayunga primary school, Namusera Umea primary school, Nkoowe High school, Kavumba church of Uganda primary school, Kasengejje church of Uganda primary school, Kasengejje secondary school, Highfield High school of East Africa, Balibaseka secondary school
Particularly we discussed with young people about their Reproductive anatomy, normal body changes especially in adolescence, consequences of premature sexual activity, HIV/AIDS and STIs prevention, and their rights.
